US Dollar Heads for Fourth Weekly Gain as Fed Rate Hike Bets Persist

US Dollar Index (DXY) USD/JPY EUR/USD GBP/USD AUD/USD

The US dollar eased slightly on Friday, October 9, but remained on track for a fourth consecutive weekly gain as investors assessed the Federal Reserve’s policy outlook and awaited further signals from US consumer sentiment and inflation expectations.

The dollar’s weekly performance reflects persistent expectations that the Fed could raise interest rates again before the end of 2026. At the same time, a modest decline in Treasury yields and easing oil prices provided some relief to currency markets.

Fed Policy Expectations Continue to Support the Dollar

The Federal Reserve’s September meeting minutes indicated that policymakers remained concerned about inflation and considered further monetary tightening a possibility.

Although expectations for a rate increase in October had eased, market participants continued to anticipate a possible increase in December. This outlook helped support the dollar over the week, even as it weakened slightly during Friday’s trading.

The direction of US Treasury yields remains an important variable. Higher yields can support demand for dollar-denominated assets, while a sustained decline in yields may reduce some of that advantage.

USD/JPY Rises as Japanese Household Spending Weakens

USD/JPY rose 0.2% after Japanese government data showed that household spending fell 3.1% year over year in August. The decline was smaller than the 3.5% contraction expected by economists, but monthly spending increased only 0.1%, below the 0.5% forecast.

The data raised further questions about the strength of private consumption in Japan and the Bank of Japan’s scope to increase interest rates again.

The yen also remained sensitive to fiscal policy expectations and the possibility of additional Japanese government borrowing. These factors, together with the interest-rate outlook in the United States, may continue to influence USD/JPY.

EUR/USD and GBP/USD Face Different Drivers

The euro recovered modestly as oil prices and US yields eased. However, concerns over France’s public debt and political obstacles to budget measures remained important sources of pressure for the common currency.

Reuters reported that the euro had recently traded near a 17-month low before recovering to around $1.123 on Friday. Despite the rebound, it remained on course for a fifth consecutive weekly decline.

Sterling was comparatively steady, while the Australian dollar gained modestly during Friday’s Asian trading session. These movements suggest that the dollar’s broad direction is important, but individual currency pairs may also respond to domestic economic conditions and regional risks.

What to Watch Next

The next major signals include US consumer sentiment, inflation expectations, Federal Reserve communications, and changes in Treasury yields.

For DXY, the key question is whether expectations of further Fed tightening continue to outweigh the effect of lower yields. For USD/JPY, Japanese consumption and the Bank of Japan’s policy outlook remain important alongside US rate expectations.

A shift toward fewer expected Fed rate increases could reduce dollar support, while renewed hawkish signals may help extend its recent weekly advance.
