Asian Stocks Hit a Two-Month Low as AI Concerns Intensify

Chipmakers Lead the Decline

Asian equities fell sharply on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. The MSCI index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan dropped more than 2%, reaching its lowest level since late July. Reuters linked the decline to a selloff in chipmakers and concerns about intensifying competition in artificial intelligence.

Samsung shares fell 8%, while SK Hynix declined 10%. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, or TSMC, lost 1.8%. Kioxia Holdings dropped 14%, and SoftBank fell 8%.

The decline followed losses among US chipmakers in the previous session. Investors reacted to reports of technological progress by China’s ChangXin Memory Technologies, or CXMT. That development raised concerns that Chinese companies could narrow the technology gap with global competitors.

Investors Reassess the AI Trade

Artificial intelligence stocks have been an important part of the market rally over the past four years. Heavy spending on AI helped support corporate profits and encouraged investor optimism.

However, the rally also raised questions about investment concentration and the sustainability of profit margins. Investors are now assessing whether AI demand can continue growing at the same pace. They are also considering whether stronger competition could reduce the exceptional profits enjoyed by some companies.

Charu Chanana, Saxo’s chief investment strategist, told Reuters that the CXMT news was a clear trigger for the memory-stock selloff. She also said the broader issue was that investors had become less forgiving of the AI trade.

Her comments suggest that market concerns extend beyond one company. Investors are reassessing expectations for industry growth and future profitability.

Regional Stock Markets Come Under Pressure

South Korea’s KOSPI fell more than 6%. Reuters described it as the index’s sharpest daily decline since July. Japan’s Nikkei dropped 2.6%, while Taiwanese shares fell 2%.

The pressure illustrates how sentiment changes in the chip industry can spread across regional markets. Countries and companies with significant exposure to technology supply chains may be more vulnerable when investors reduce risk.

Nasdaq futures fell 0.77% when Reuters prepared its report. European futures were also down 0.2%. Those moves showed that technology concerns were not limited to Asian markets.

US Treasuries and Inflation Data

As equities declined, investors moved toward government bonds. The US 10-year Treasury yield fell five basis points to 5.193%. That moved the yield further from the 24-year high of 5.364% reached the previous week.

Reuters also highlighted risks facing the bond market. Inflationary pressure from elevated energy prices and concerns about government borrowing could limit a sustained recovery in bonds.

Investors were awaiting US inflation data on Wednesday for clues about Federal Reserve policy. Reuters cited CME FedWatch data showing an 80.6% probability that the Fed would hold rates at its next meeting.

Results from major US banks were another focus. JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo were scheduled to report that day.

Potential Impact on US Indices

Market analysis: the potential impact on the Nasdaq 100 is classified as High because the report focuses on chip losses and concerns about AI profitability. The potential impact on the S&P 500 and Dow Jones is Medium–High. The Russell 2000 may also respond to broader changes in risk sentiment.

Reuters did not state that every US index would necessarily fall. Actual market performance would also depend on earnings results, inflation data, and Treasury yields.

Conclusion

Asian stocks fell amid a chip selloff and rising concerns about AI competition. Investors also sought safety in government bonds as Treasury yields declined.

For US markets, attention turned to the Nasdaq 100, bank earnings, and CPI data. The report presents a significant fundamental risk, but it does not guarantee that all stock indices will decline.
