PRECIOUS-Gold steady as markets strap in for inflation data

Gold Holds Near $4,200 as Traders Await US Inflation Data

Gold prices were broadly steady in early Asian trading on October 12 as investors prepared for a series of US economic releases that could influence the Federal Reserve’s next interest-rate decision. The market was also assessing geopolitical uncertainty and the potential inflationary effects of elevated energy costs.

Reuters reported that spot gold remained little changed at $4,200.23 per ounce by 0010 GMT. The metal reached a one-week high on the previous Friday. US gold futures for December delivery gained 0.2% to $4,225.50 per ounce.

The limited movement reflected a market waiting for fresh information. Gold can attract demand during periods of uncertainty, but its price is also sensitive to interest-rate expectations and movements in the US dollar. These factors can work in opposite directions, leaving the metal trading within a relatively narrow range ahead of major economic announcements.

Inflation and Interest Rates Remain Central to Gold Trading

The US Consumer Price Index was due on Wednesday, followed by producer-price and retail-sales data on Thursday. These reports could help investors assess the direction of inflation and the Federal Reserve’s likely policy response.

Gold does not pay interest. When interest rates or yields on other assets rise, the opportunity cost of holding gold can increase because investors forgo potential income from interest-bearing investments. Conversely, expectations of lower rates can make gold comparatively more attractive, depending on currency movements and broader market conditions.

The report noted that the Federal Reserve raised rates by 25 basis points in September. At the time of the report, market pricing implied an 18% probability of another rate increase in October and an 84% probability of an increase by December, based on CME FedWatch data. Those figures represented market expectations at that moment, not confirmed future decisions.

Energy Costs and Physical Demand Add Context

The Middle East conflict also influenced the market. Higher energy costs can put pressure on households and businesses and may contribute to inflation concerns. However, the relationship between inflation and gold is not automatic: the response also depends on real yields, the dollar and expectations for monetary policy.

Physical demand conditions varied across markets. Reuters reported sluggish gold demand in India during the previous week, while trading in China remained subdued during a holiday-shortened period. The report also recorded gains in several other precious metals: spot silver rose 0.5% to $61.08 per ounce, platinum gained 0.4% to $1,693.51, and palladium increased 0.7% to $1,155.84.

For gold traders, the upcoming US data was a key near-term event because it could shift expectations for interest rates and the dollar. The steady price near $4,200 showed that investors were waiting for stronger signals rather than committing to a clear directional move.
