Oil Surges Above $104 as Middle East Supply Risks Escalate

Oil Shock Becomes Friday’s Biggest Macro Risk

Oil prices became one of the most important market drivers on October 8 as renewed tensions in the Middle East raised concerns about disruptions to global energy supplies.

Brent crude surged nearly 4% to around $102.28 a barrel, while WTI rose to approximately $91.99. Other market reports put Brent above $104 during the session as concerns surrounding shipping through the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz intensified. Reuters

Strait of Hormuz Becomes a Major Market Risk

The Strait of Hormuz is particularly important because it is one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes.

Reuters reported that attacks on tankers in the area have increased, while the conflict involving Iran and regional actors has entered its eighth month.

The concern for investors is not simply that oil prices are rising. The bigger risk is that a sustained disruption could create a new inflation shock.

If oil remains above $100 for an extended period, headline inflation could rise again at a time when central banks are already dealing with elevated bond yields.

U.S. Hurricane Adds Another Supply Problem

At the same time, Hurricane Isaias has disrupted oil production in the Gulf of Mexico.

More than 25% of current U.S. Gulf oil production and more than 16% of natural-gas production had reportedly been shut in because of the storm.

This creates an unusual combination: Middle East geopolitical risk is threatening international supply while a weather event is simultaneously reducing U.S. production.

Why Friday Could Be Volatile

Oil above $100 can have a direct impact on several of our target markets.

For Gold, higher inflation risk can provide support, but higher yields and a stronger dollar can offset it.

For DXY, persistent energy inflation can strengthen expectations that the Fed will need to maintain restrictive policy.

For Nasdaq, S&P 500 and Russell 2000, expensive oil can create pressure because it raises input costs and reduces expectations for monetary easing.

For AUD/USD, higher oil prices are not automatically positive despite Australia’s commodity exposure. If oil triggers stronger USD and higher global yields, AUD can still weaken.

The key question for Friday is therefore whether oil stabilizes above $100 or begins to retrace.
